The Trail Blazers have been struggling. Ok that is being light about it, they have looked pretty bad, with the exception of their last matchup against the Pelicans. Granted, they allowed Anthony Davis to have a career best game, but hey, a win is a win, and it was nice to see the entire team get involved.
So now here is the situation the team is in, they are making their final push as the season winds down to upgrade their playoff position. They are not in a bad spot, but it was only a couple of weeks ago when we thought they would be in the third or fourth seed. As it stands right now, they are looking at the 5th. Aldridge is hurt, and won’t be back for a couple of weeks. Mo Williams’ status for the upcoming game against the Warriors has been upgraded to “probable,” but no official word has come through just yet. Damian Lillard has once again been tasked with carrying this team on his back heading into the playoffs. Lillard has been doing his part, but the team has folded time and time again defensively, which has proven the be the achilles heel for the Blazers throughout the year.
With the win against the Pelicans being a boost in the teams morale, it is a little unnerving to think that the win required a season best from Dorrell Wright, and a big night from Nicolas Batum. When guys who normally don’t perform like that have huge nights against sub-par teams, you wonder what they have to do against elite level teams in order to succeed.
One thing is for certain, the Blazers have been on a serious slide, and at the worst time of the season for something like this to take place. A win over the Pelicans is helpful, but the true test will come against the likes of the Warriors, who are one of the leagues most lethal scoring teams. The matchup of Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard will be interesting, but more interesting will be to see if this Blazers squad can continue to mesh together without the likes of their super star PF in LaMarcus Aldridge. This is more than a game, this has playoffs written all over it.
